Improving trafficability in Cusco

In order to improve trafficability, the Regional Government of Cusco has created the Regional Road Plan (PVR for its initials in Spanish) through which action will be taken in 1.500 Km of highway that were in a state of complete abandonment. The area of influence of this project –which has been divided into three road networks- includes areas of extreme poverty in the north and south of the region.

The work to be carried out as part of this Road Plan includes the following activities: Reshaping of the existing soil and of works of art; placement of stabilized soil with asphalt emulsion and bituminous coating; and horizontal and vertical signposting and installation of road protection elements, as well as the building of passing lanes (plazoletas de cruce).

The entire work will be concluded in five years and the successful bidders will carry out the maintenance for five more years. For a better and fast completion, three road networks which will connect the Region of Cusco to other regions have been determined, thus allowing for a better commercial relationship.

Road Network I, under the responsibility of the company Canear, will connect the upper provinces of the region to the city of Cusco. There are 641 kilometers from Chumbivilcas, going through Canas, Espinar and Canchis, to Cusco.

Road Network II –with a distance of 319 kilometers- is still being executed by the company ICCGSA with an investment of more than 156 million soles. This section starts in the Chuquicahuana Bridge in Acomayo, toward Paruro and San Jerónimo in Cusco.

The last section, Road Network III, will be paved by the Concar-Obrainsa Consortium. It is 524 kilometers long and it will connect the Cusco region bordering the Peruvian jungle (ceja de selva) to Cusco.

This time we will talk about Road Network II, which specifically consists of the highway sections of Chuquicahuana Bridge-Acomayo-Rondocan-Mayumbamba in Paruro-Acomayo-Acos and the San Jerónimo-Paruro-Accha-Omacha Huilquiccasa section in Livitaca. All this section is being executed from different fronts.
