Cusco – Las Bambas highway
Road improvement (phase II)
The work consisted of the improvement of the road that connects Cusco to Las Bambas, specifically between the towns of Paruro and Ccapacmarca, in addition to the implementation of a maintenance service for such road in order to provide better and increased trafficability in the only road existing in the area, in order to meet the future traffic requirements due to the operation of the Las Bambas mining project.
Las Bambas is a mining exploration project of the company Xstrata Tintaya S.A. It will develop the resources of Las Bambas through the construction of all the facilities required to process mineralization with a new concentration plant for sulphide flotation. The main mining facilities will be developed at an elevation between 3,850 and 4,200 masl, in a mountainous area.
There are no industries in or near the site that can be used to support the development or the operation of the project, which includes all process facilities, supplies and infrastructure necessary for a completely operational mine, processing plant and pipeline.
Exploitation involves the processing of a total of 900 million tons of mineral at a rate of 140,000 tons of mineral per day, during at least 18 years of useful life.
The primary purpose of the road improvement work (Phase II), in addition to meeting the future traffic requirements, is to reduce travel time, benefiting the client, its contractors and third parties, as well as increase vehicle traffic.
Scope of the project
The works performed include: the placing of tough protective barriers in the quarries, cleaning and elimination of environmental liability materials on the platform, profiling and arrangement of such platform at road surfacing and maintenance level, execution of all the works required to maintain an adequate drainage of the works during the entire term of this contract, exploitation and handling of borrow pits (quarries); and preparation, transport and supply of mass backfill material of borrow pit or excavations.
The inappropriate material was replaced by borrow pit or excavation material (when required) according to Bechtel’s instructions. Furthermore, gabions were supplied and installed and the road was widened with the construction of rock fills.
